Welcome Messages from Our Executive Director and Organizing Committee Chair

Karah Goshinmon Foster, Executive Director at Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre

The Labour Day weekend of 2020 would have marked the 8th annual Nikkei Matsuri and a 20th anniversary celebration of the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre at Nikkei Place. Although we will miss welcoming thousands of visitors this year, we are driven by our mission to provide a place to come together, particularly during challenging times, in a local, familiar environment. The health and wellness of our guests, volunteers and staff is paramount. Following orders, guidelines and protocols, the NNMCC reopened on June 2nd after closing on March 18th, by gradually bringing programs back, while spreading out event-based offerings from 2-days to 1-month, allowing us to welcome you back carefully.

You’ll find local artisans and purveyors of Japanese-inspired goods, food trucks, expanded museum pop-up shop, and Omikoshi displays thanks to Rakuichi. Friday nights will feature the musical styling of singer/songwriter Pico Masaki and her koto, and on Saturdays a mini Kids Zone.

To the locals who had to alter their plans to visit Japan – for family, friends, work or leisure – and anyone in need of a little matsuri spirit, we hope you will enjoy SUMMER at NIKKEI GARDEN.

It was after our first Nikkei Matsuri committee meeting in January that the pandemic was getting progressively worse. With much uncertainty in the air, we held online meetings, and began searching for alternatives we could offer the community, and keep Nikkei Matsuri alive.

While we are unable to host a large event this year, we aim to share the spirit of Nikkei Matsuri by presenting SUMMER AT NIKKEI GARDEN – a Japanese cultural marketplace of food and merchandise items. While many of us feel a lost sense of season due to the cancellation of so many events, we hope experiencing a little bit of Nikkei Matsuri spirit in person will bring joy to our community. Why not attend in Yukata and take a selfie in front of our Mikoshi display?

Following the Health Authority’s guidelines, we will be limiting attendance for health and safety reasons. Visitors will need to purchase advance tickets for a specific time slot online (available here).

You can also enjoy Matsuri and Japanese cultural content virtually with Matsuri Share. Follow us on our social media channels for fun challenges and activities!

Thank you for your continued support for Nikkei Matsuri, and we hope to see you at SUMMER AT NIKKEI GARDEN !
