2017 Welcome Messages

MESSAGE FROM ORGANIZING COMMITTEE CHAIR

Celebrating its 5th year, Nikkei Matsuri is the Nikkei Centre’s premier family event. This year, hours will be from 11am – 7pm. You don’t need to wait until evening to watch “Matsuri Star Talent Search”, presented by Vancouver Shinpo. Possibly, you will see a new “star” being born!

This year we welcome the YOKA HANAYAGI DANCE ACADEMY, a 15 member traditional dance troupe from Japan. As well, our festival partner Greece will be showcasing their traditional dancing. With demonstrations of Martial Arts and Japanese Tea Ceremony, the Mikoshi Shrine parade and Bon-Odori Dance, you can enjoy a truly multi-cultural experience.

From yoyo, Hello Kitty sand picture workshops, the Marketplace, and the ever popular street food and beer garden, the whole family will find something to enjoy.

Become part of Nikkei Matsuri spirit and wear a Japanese Yukata (rentals available).

We invite you to an authentic Japanese summer festival at Nikkei Matsuri and hope to see you this labour day weekend.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre is thrilled to celebrate the fifth anniversary of our annual Nikkei Matsuri Family Festival.

In five short years this celebration of Japanese Culture has quickly evolved into one of the premier summertime cultural events of Metro Vancouver in the heart of Burnaby.

This year’s edition will not disappoint as our organizing committee has spent countless hours ensuring that the entertainment, the Food Zone presented by Bento Sushi and our ever popular kids zone present everything that the community has grown to expect. And as a special edition this year, we are welcoming the Greek community who will be participating in this year’s event.

And as always the tradition of our Matsuri Star Talent Search presented by Vancouver Shinpo will continue and if past years are any indication we will find a member of our community who has a hidden talent that we will be proud to celebrate.

On behalf of the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre Board of Directors, our wonderful volunteers and dedicated staff, we would all like to welcome everyone of all cultures to the 2017 edition of the Nikkei Matsuri Family Festival.

Roger Lemire, Executive Director
